A Chinese visitor wrote this about some place in Hangzhou, the city I live in. The way she explains it is very refreshing:
Temple (Tomb) of General Yue Fei was built in memory of Yue Fei, he was killed by some bad governor Qin Hui and his followers, people made these bad person`s statue in front of Yue Tome and now these bad person are still on their knees and was spit by every person, but now since it`s a part of heritage, so not allowed to do that any more.
So you can see there is a note saying you are not allowed to spit on them.
